The education system in the UK has long been hailed as one of the best in the world for its heritage of academic excellence and quality teaching. Both its diversity and flexibility strive for total education and all-rounded development, providing a conducive environment to explore and shape one’s personality. There is no argument that the best universities in the UK consistently top the world ranking. Therefore, entering a reputed boarding school is an excellent stepping stone to join these world-class elites.
Growing up in a relatively sheltered environment, both my parents and I cognized the need for a change in my personal development. The idea of studying in the UK had sowed the seeds. As soon as I set foot in the boarding school, I was given the free hand to engage myself in the school community. This aligns with the school’s values that are deeply rooted in nurturing communication and networking. I was very indebted to all the teaching staff in the boarding school for their support in my every pursuit. The interactive learning process through intensive discussions gradually honed my logical thinking and interpersonal skills to my future career.
There were various highlights from my time in the boarding school, one being the various performance opportunities as a chamber musician. I was given the chance to play in the prestigious St. John’s Smith Square in London. Not that I never gave any performance before, this exposure was valued for the manifestation of good teamwork under a major setting. There was a strong sense of camaraderie being built up throughout the vigorous process of learning and understanding amongst my teammates. Pontifex was another highlight. It was an annual running race around the school held towards the end of a school year for all sixth formers. It was a great experience (and achievement) to have taken part in it, for it stretched my physique and volition to the fullest.
The freedom offered by the UK boarding school education enabled free exchange of ideas and knowledge through discussions. This was very rewarding in the way that such training helped enrich my independent thinking in subsequent years. More importantly, the system drove us to think big and comprehensively in any life issues. I would encourage both prospective and current students of UK boarding schools to take this invaluable opportunity to immerse into the school community and to relish the cultural diversities. There are much more UK boarding schools can offer, so think beyond the grades and find your grace.
